Body and Blood was staged in October 2016 at the Lion and Unicorn, Kentish Town and The Colour House Theatre, Colliers Wood as part of the “In the Shadow and In the Shelter” play festival.
Although arranged marriages remained in existence in rural Ireland as late as the 1970s, very few people have heard about them. Playwright Lorraine Mullaney chose to write this play as it reflected the experience of a member of her family.
Aileen comes to London to look for her runaway sister who has left her native Ireland to escape an arranged marriage. Although finding Maeve is her main reason for coming to London, she soon discovers that there are many reasons for staying. But will her family let her? Or will she have to leave London and the love that she has found there to return to a life where duty rather happiness will be her prime focus?
